Colin Daw 50 not out!
At their last meeting the members of Birnbeck Lodge had the particular pleasure of seeing Colin Daw receive his 50 year long service award from Martin Slocombe, the Past APGM.
Colin has had an interesting 50 years in Masonry, he was initiated on 17th October 1973 and has held office in every year of service until the current date. Starting as a Steward he is now the Catering Officer. Colin was in the Chair in 1985 and again in 2009, he currently holds the rank of PProvSGW.
Colin was born in 1944 inWallscourt Rd, Filton, Bristol, the youngest of three children by eleven years, sadly his mother died of cancer in 1948 after suffering for many years. Colin did not have an easy childhood after that!
Thornbury Grammar School had the pleasure of educating Colin, upon leaving he got a job in the Civil Service in engineering finance working for the GPO, saying most of his time was spent signing dockets for the building of Goonhilly Down. After a brief spell at the Prudential, he set up Weston Fruit Sales, running it until he retired in 2007.
Colin loved motorbikes and cars, so much so that instead of buying his wife Angela a gold necklace, he spotted a 1936 Morris 8, which he bought instead! Later buying a Lea-Francis P Type; Colin spent many years travelling in this with Angela across the UK and even Jersey. He was also the clubs regalia secretary, reluctantly only giving up his post in June of this year.
Colin was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease 12 years ago, but this has not stopped him from being busy and continuing with his Freemasonry. Everyone at Birnbeck Lodge owe an enormous debt of gratitude to Colin for all his past and present years of service – In the inimitable words of their WM, “God Bless you Colin!”
