Operative Masons set to work in Langport

The scaffolding is now up and on the 1st of August Operative (not speculative) Masons will set to work on the Famous Hanging Chapel in Langport, home to Portcullis and Somerset Farmers Lodges.

The damage was caused some moths ago, by a container lorry hitting the Medieval archway and damaging the ancient Ham stones which support the roof of the arch.

There will be some re-pointing work completed on the parapet and general re-pointing around the building. The work will be carried out by a local Stone Mason who has also worked on Salisbury Cathedral.

It is expected the work will take about 3 to 4 weeks to complete.

The Hanging Chapel is a Grade 1 listed building and a scheduled Ancient Monument, which is believed to date back to the 12th Century. If you want to know why its called the Hanging Chapel, pay a visit to the Lodges and learn the interesting story!
