Somerset Sceptre arrives at the Double

It was a busy evening at Abbey Chapter’s April meeting with both a double Exaltation Ceremony and the delivery of the Somerset Sceptre from King Alfred Chapter.

Having been forewarned by the Director of Ceremonies, Barry McCormack, that they would be starting on time, the Chapter duly opened precisely at 18:30.

With the initial business out of the way, the delegation from King Alfred Chapter presented the Somerset Sceptre to the Principals, which they had received from Chapter Marine. It will be transferred to Tyntesfield Chapter by Abbey Chapter companions in May.

With the new Sceptre safely delivered, First Principal Paul led the Chapter through the double exaltation ceremony for Companions John Watkeys and Keith Crease.

Brian Hook conducted the candidates through the ceremony, ably assisted by Mike Wake, who was variously Janitor, Assistant Sojourner or Charity Steward, he was supported by stand-in ADC, Mark Saunders.

In one of the fastest promotions ever, before he could even take his seat, the Principals had appointed John Watkeys as Organist – however he had been forewarned!

It was a most enjoyable evening, serious where necessary and also good humoured, with laughter and enjoyment shared by all, both at the Convocation and in the dining room afterwards.
