Liam Races the Sun
One of the great strengths of Freemasonry is the encouragement given to one another to support charitable causes and local communities.
Liam Smith, from Gerard Lodge in Keynsham, recently took part in the Race the Sun – Cheddar Gorge challenge an event which raises vital funds for Action Medical Research, a charity dedicated to improving the lives of sick and vulnerable babies and children through pioneering medical research.
Race the Sun is a demanding dawn-to-dusk team challenge, combining a 32-mile cycle, a 9-mile hike and a 2-mile kayak around the spectacular Cheddar Gorge and Reservoir.
Taking place on one of the hottest days of the year, the challenge proved every bit as difficult as anticipated. The soaring temperatures added another level of difficulty to an already demanding course, making determination, resilience and, above all, teamwork essential throughout the day. Like many worthwhile endeavours, success was not about individual achievement but about supporting one another and working together to reach the finish line.
The team’s efforts extended well beyond completing the course. Thanks to the generosity of family, friends, colleagues and supporters, they raised an impressive £2,330 for Action Medical Research. Every pound raised will help fund research into conditions affecting babies and children, ensuring that the impact of the challenge will continue long after the finish line was crossed. It is a wonderful example of what can be achieved when people come together in support of a worthwhile cause.
Those qualities of perseverance, mutual support and helping others are values that resonate strongly with Freemasonry, as are the principles of kindness, service and community that are at the heart of the fraternity.
Congratulations to Liam and his teammates on completing such a challenging event while raising funds for a truly worthwhile cause. Their efforts are a fine example of what can be achieved through teamwork, determination and a shared desire to make a positive difference.
