Quantock Lodge Welcomes Brother Paul

The initiation of Mr Paul Stevens into Quantock Lodge, Watchet was an evening rich in warmth, tradition, and the unmistakable spirit of Somerset Freemasonry. Even before stepping into the temple, Paul was welcomed by the assembled brethren with genuine enthusiasm. The handshakes, smiles, and heartfelt greetings set the perfect tone for the journey he was about to begin.
Paul’s entry into the Craft was made all the more meaningful by the presence of his proposer and long‑standing friend, Brother Jamie Williams. His pride was evident throughout the evening, and during the later stages of the ceremony, the shared smiles and steady eye contact between the two spoke volumes. Adding to the sense of occasion, another close friend of Paul’s, Brother Simon Greenway, was also present to witness this important milestone in his Masonic journey.
Under the calm and assured guidance of the Junior Deacon Denis Griggs, the ceremony unfolded with dignity, precision, and sincerity. Denis delivered the Charge with eloquence and depth, offering Paul a powerful introduction to the principles and expectations of Freemasonry. Brother Bruce Freeman presented the Working Tools with clarity and confidence, explaining their symbolism in a way that resonated strongly with the brethren. These ritual elements were delivered with great skill and contributed significantly to the impact of the evening.

After the lodge had closed, Paul’s welcome into the wider Masonic community continued when Brother Chris Nevada, Quantock Lodge’s Adair representative, presented him with his Adair Club badge. This symbolic gesture marked the beginning of Paul’s connection not only to Quantock Lodge but to the broader network of Somerset Freemasonry.
The Festive Board that followed was lively, warm, and filled with camaraderie; visiting brethren from across Somerset added to the atmosphere of celebration. After the meal, Willie Willmetts delivered his explanation of the Broken Column in his customary descriptive and captivating style, offering Paul further insight into the richness of Masonic symbolism.
As the evening drew to a close, Brother Dave Gardner proposed the Visitors’ Toast, drawing a thoughtful parallel between a Mason’s first step into Freemasonry and a brother’s first visit to a lodge – a moment of welcome that marks the beginning of a lifelong journey. The response was delivered by Ed Richings, Worshipful Master of Vivary Lodge, whose trademark humour had the room alternating between laughter and reflection. His well‑timed joke provided the perfect blend of wit and tradition that defines a successful Festive Board.
From the heartfelt greetings before entering the temple to the final toast of the evening, the initiation of Brother Paul was a night that will be fondly remembered by all who attended. It showcased the very best of Quantock Lodge – strong ritual, genuine friendship, and the shared joy of welcoming a new brother into the Craft.
A wonderful night enjoyed by all.
