Brotherhood Renewed, Welcoming the Assistant Provincial Grand Master
The Royal Naval Lodge met in due form on Friday, 9th May 2025 in Yeovil, the day following the nation’s solemn and celebratory recognition of the 80th Anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day. In the Lodge Room the mood among the members was reflective, yet cheerful but also one of quiet reverence, gratitude, and unity.

A highlight of the evening was the official Membership Challenge Visit conducted by the Assistant Provincial Grand Master of the province of Somerset, Anthony Guthrie. His entrance was received with honour, and he was formally welcomed by the Lodge Master. His remarks were both inspiring and gently encouraging. He congratulated the Lodge on its recent membership efforts and offered sage advice on retaining new brethren. He reminded us that while the world continues to change, the Craft remains a steady anchor – especially when supported by enthusiastic members.

The Lodge was further enriched by a short historical talk delivered by Gaz Bottomley, entitled “Naval Battles Around Malta During WWII and Connections to Freemasonry.” Drawing from archival materials and personal accounts, the presentation offered a compelling insight into the wartime resilience of Freemasonry in its efforts to sustain military personnel and civilians alike. “The values of fraternity, charity, and resilience upheld by Masonic lodges may have played a subtle yet meaningful role in Malta’s wartime survival. Together, the island’s naval battles and its hidden networks of brotherhood tell a story of extraordinary endurance and courage at one of the darkest moments of the 20th century.”

The Lodge was closed in peace and harmony. Brethren retired to the Festive Board where toasts were given to His Majesty the King, the Province, visitors, and absent brethren. The evening concluded with laughter, reflection, and a renewed sense of fellowship – helped along, of course, by some excellent pudding.
