A Raft for the Craft
Benevolent Lodge Wells took to the water this year by entering a raft in the annual Wells Moat Boat Race.
A long-standing Wells tradition, the event sees competitors design, build and race their own rafts around the moat at the Bishop’s Palace. It provides a fantastic day out for spectators and participants alike, while bringing the local community together.
Our aim was simple: to support this wonderful tradition, raise the profile of the Lodge and, most importantly, have some fun. I’m pleased to say that all three objectives were achieved!
The project was a real team effort and brought the Lodge together brilliantly. Nick Waterhouse did a fantastic job organising the event, while one member built the raft, another crafted the oars, and another supplied the team T-shirts. Five members and a members wife took part in the race, supported by a great turnout of Lodge members who came along to cheer us on.
The true spirit of Masonry and brotherhood was particularly evident when, with only days to go before the race, we realised we had no vehicle large enough to transport the raft from where it was being built to the moat. Thankfully, a Brother from another Lodge stepped in to help, transporting the raft to the event and collecting it afterwards. It was a wonderful example of the brotherly support and friendship that binds us together as Freemasons.
The team put in a tremendous effort on the day, competing against some far more experienced entrants. Although there is certainly room for improvement, we have laid some strong foundations on which to build for next year—and plans and ideas for the next raft are already beginning to take shape!
Events such as the Wells Moat Boat Race provide a fantastic opportunity for community engagement. We hope that by continuing to take part, we can raise the profile of Benevolent Lodge Wells, support important local traditions and, above all, continue to enjoy ourselves while strengthening the bonds of friendship and brotherhood.
