Friendship on the Move: John De Clivedon Lodge Delivers the Trowel to Woodspring
There is an old saying in Somerset Freemasonry: “The best part of being a Mason is the friends you haven’t met yet.” That spirit was in full bloom recently as a hearty deputation from John De Clivedon Lodge 7824 made the journey to Yatton Masonic Hall to pay a visit to their neighbours at Woodspring Lodge 8791.
The purpose of the evening? A formal and friendly handover of the esteemed Somerset Traveling Trowel.
A Tradition of Togetherness
The Traveling Trowel serves as a brilliant catalyst for inter-lodge visiting. It is a prized symbol within the province, designed to strengthen the links between different Masonic centres and encourage Brethren to explore the unique history and diverse traditions of lodges beyond their own.
For the brethren of John De Clivedon, the visit was a fantastic opportunity to uphold this Somerset tradition, reinforcing the close ties between Clevedon and Yatton through shared ritual and genuine camaraderie.
The Handover at Yatton
The evening at Woodspring Lodge was a masterclass in hospitality. After a warm welcome in the Temple, the Worshipful Master of John De Clivedon formally presented the Trowel to the Worshipful Master of Woodspring.
The presentation serves as a symbolic reminder of our shared duty to “spread the cement of brotherly love.” In true Somerset fashion, the formal business was handled with dignity, followed by an evening of excellent food and even better conversation at the Festive Board.
The Journey Continues
The Trowel now rests in the safe hands of Woodspring Lodge 8791, but its journey is far from over. In a highlight for the provincial calendar, Woodspring will be delivering the Trowel to the Somerset Provincial Grand Lodge AGM on Wednesday, 2nd April, held at the Webbington Hotel.
This handover at the Annual General Meeting will showcase the spirit of fellowship to Brethren from across the entire Province, proving that whether in a local hall or a grand provincial gathering, the “Traveling Trowel” continues to build lasting connections.
Events like these remind us that Freemasonry is an active, vibrant community. Whether you are a Master Mason looking to broaden your horizons or someone curious about joining a society built on integrity and friendship, there has never been a better time to get involved.
