Taunton SMFA Post-Christmas Lunch

The Taunton branch of the SMFA held a very successful post-Christmas lunch on Sunday 18th January 2026. As is the norm for this branch, the event was very well attended, with over 60 members and friends. Starting with a complementary glass of fizz or something soft, 5* Karen, Hall Manager Hayley and the team then worked their socks off as usual keeping us fed and watered. As always at Taunton, the catering was first-class, the desserts especially… Trifles and Pavlovas are my personal weakness… The tables were beautifully decorated and the seating plan gave everybody the chance to renew friendships and it was splendid to see some new faces. We were also pleased to see Ray Guthrie and it was good to learn that Hazel’s recovery continues.

After the meal, we were royally entertained by Gregory and Ellen Steward, an accomplished brother and sister singing duo. Both are highly talented, having attended Wells Cathedral School and then obtained their degree qualifications from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. They have both been soloists in national choirs, won prizes and appeared on radio and TV. Their programme included excerpts from operas (Rigoletto, The Merry Widow) and musicals (West Side Story, Sound of Music, Porgy & Bess), and several others. Both are exceptional singers and credit is also due to their Mum who operated the sound desk!

As ever, much planning goes into these events, so congratulations to Lynn, Sandra, Shirley and others for all the hard work, that paid off so well. The next meeting of the Taunton branch is at Taunton Masonic Hall on 4th February 2026 (always the first Wednesday in the month) and our speaker will be Lauraine Newcombe – a former Chair Person from U3A Taunton Branch. All are welcome: SMFA is not just for ‘our widows’, SMFA is open to Masons (retired or working), families and friends. The meetings are fun and the coffee is always hot!
