Tennyson lodge buys an electric bike for Baytree School, Clevedon.
Baytree School is a specialist school for students who have severe and/or profound and multiple learning difficulties. They operate two schools in Somerset, a more established school in Weston-Super-Mare, and a near brand new one in Clevedon.
The Clevedon campus opened in 2023 with 80 students, it currently has 120, and has plans to increase this to 180. The school is organized into 8 classes, namely, Red, Orange, Yellow, Pink, Green Purple, The Pier and the Tickenham, all of whom meet for assembly every Friday morning….which is where Worshipful brothers Steve Blewitt (now Immediate Past master), Tim Gosling (treasurer) and Andy Wade (secretary) enter the story, having been invited to attend assembly on the 5th December.
Steve, Tim and Andy have at least 170 years-worth of experience of life since school, but can all distinctly remember assembly being a rather sombre and formal affair, with the headmaster or deputy speaking to a near silent room of children, most of whom were sat on the floor.
Assembly at Baytree school couldn’t be more different.
The assistant headteacher, Matt, burst open the assembly with seemingly endless energy and enthusiasm. He gave a “shout out” to each class in turn and got a cheer back from each and every one. He handed out certificates of merit, which were given to anyone who had gone beyond what would normally be expected, and again, each certificate was received with a cheer and a clap for the deserving student. Next was dance time, which Matt of course led, and just before close, he invited Steve, Tim and Andy to say hello and present a cheque for £1250, to buy outright an electric bicycle for the students to use in the school grounds.
When asked, Steve, Tim and Andy couldn’t decide who had enjoyed assembly more, the students, the teachers or the Brethren, but with broad grins they posed for a photo and very much look forward to supporting the school for many years to come.
