Somerset v Wiltshire Golf Match

Saltford Golf Club, Somerset, was the venue for this year’s annual golf competition between the Provinces of Somerset and Wiltshire, which was held on Thursday 15th May.

The Cyril Driver Memorial Cup, which was presented to Somerset Fairway Lodge by the late W.Bro Ian White in 2006, is the trophy to be won at this annual competition, which has been held for over fifty years.

Somerset was led by their Captain, PGM and MEGS, Ray Guthrie, whilst Wiltshire’s PGM & MEGS, John Reid, played for Wiltshire, which was led by their Captain, Barry Young .

This year’s match was keenly contested by seven teams of two from each Province, with Four Ball match-play being the format.

The course was in splendid playing condition and the weather on the day was beautifully sunny with a pleasant cooling gentle NE breeze.

Once all the competitors had completed their matches and were back in the clubhouse to enjoy a well-earned drink and presentation dinner, the scores were revealed.

Somerset had indeed managed to retain the trophy again this year, but it couldn’t have been closer, with Somerset winning 4 -3.

In addition to the main trophy there were two additional skills prizes, bottles of wine, awarded to one player from each team for achieving ‘nearest-the-pin-off-the-tee’ on two of the course’s Par 3 holes.

The next round will be held at a course in Wiltshire, yet to be confirmed, in 2026.

An excellent day was enjoyed by all who took part and thanks are due to the Captains for organising their teams, and to Saltford GC for hosting the event and for the excellent condition of the course.

Brethren of any Somerset Lodge who are golfers are welcome to join in any of the golf days. Full details of match dates and contacts are available on the Somerset Fairway Lodge webpage.
