Masons Triumph Over Adversity at Royal Somerset Lodge

The Royal Somerset Lodge held its Installation meeting recently at the Frome Masonic Hall, marking a resounding success. The event drew members from across the province and beyond, all eager to witness Brother Andy Hickling’s installation as the lodge’s Worshipful Master for the ensuing year. The ceremony, renowned for its distinctive style, lived up to its legendary reputation. Following the installation, attendees enjoyed a festive board featuring a well-received carvery, a welcome return to tradition for the lodge.

Among the esteemed guests was Worshipful Brother Malcolm Elder, a former Frome Freemason currently residing in Cadogan Court. Despite facing health challenges, Malcolm made a special effort to attend the installation, remarking, “I had the time of my life at Frome Masonic Hall as a guest. It was like coming back home. I have been away for a long time, and it was wonderful to be back with my friends for life. In my 22 years of Freemasonry, I have never had such a good and happy night with so many friends. The food was great too!”

The Royal Somerset Lodge as well celebrated the triumphant return of member Jason Knight, who made his first appearance at the lodge following a life-changing incident earlier this year. Brother Knight’s heartfelt speech at the festive board, expressing his gratitude for the unwavering support he received from fellow brethren and the Provincial Almoner, moved everyone present. The atmosphere was filled with warmth and emotion as members witnessed Jasons resilience and determination. In a moving display of support, all present rose to their feet in a standing ovation, welcoming Brother Knight back to the fold with heartfelt applause.

Reflecting on his journey to the position of Worshipful Master, Andy Hickling shared that he was working at the Royal Engineers saddle club when he met two farriers who were Freemasons. He expressed interest, and one of them, Gary Burton, offered to introduce him to the lodge. He traveled 30 miles to Southeast London and the members welcomed him warmly. He was initiated into St Paul’s Lodge 615. However, life presented significant challenges in the years that followed. he faced wilderness, difficult relationships, and financial struggles. In 2006, he experienced a life-threatening illness, battling double pneumonia, swine flu, ecoli, septicaemia, and organ failure. Thankfully, he recovered, and with a stable job, a loving partner, and financial security, felt something was missing. He contacted the Province of Somerset, was connected with the Royal Somerset Lodge, and the rest, as they say, is history. He has progressed through the offices until reaching the esteemed position of Worshipful Master of this Lodge.”
