Almoners & Visiting Volunteers Bi-annual Workshop

Following a warm welcome and introduction from the Provincial Grand Almoner, Adrian Robson, Lodge Almoners received presentations from Mike Martin, Provincial Engagement Manager for the Freemasons Charity, on the evolution of the charity. This was followed by a varied and in-depth question and answer session.

Ben Hickleton, Assistant Grand Charity Steward, provided information regarding the 2031 Festival and the ways in which brethren and their lodges can contribute through donations. This led into a discussion on the importance of achieving the £2.5 million target set by the Provincial Grand Master.

A statement from Jason Knight of Royal Somerset Lodge No. 973 was read to the Almoners by John Wenborn. In his letter, Jason described how the support provided by the Freemasons Charity had made a significant difference to both him and his family following his life-changing accident two years ago. It was a poignant moment and a powerful reminder of the outstanding support provided jointly by the charity and the Province.

Peter Russell, Provincial Coordinator of the Somerset Masonic Friendship Association (SMFA), reminded Almoners of the Association’s valuable work and the importance of actively encouraging membership among brethren who no longer attend lodge meetings, as well as lodge widows.

Assistant Provincial Grand Master Barrie Palmer spoke about the vital role Almoners play within their respective lodges, particularly in relation to member engagement and retention.

The meeting was closed by the Provincial Grand Almoner, Adrian Robson, and Provincial Grand Master Ray Guthrie, who thanked the speakers, Almoners, and Visiting Volunteers for their continued commitment and dedication to their offices.

The evening concluded with a buffet.
