A Night Of Warmth, Unity & Advancement At Quantock Lodge

Quantock Lodge gathered once again at Watchet, in an atmosphere rich with friendship, purpose, and the unmistakable spirit of Somerset Freemasonry, as Brother David Shearer was passed to the Second Degree. From the outset, there was a sense that this would be an evening shaped not only by ritual excellence, but by the quiet strength and unity that define the Lodge.

Although the Worshipful Master John Sully was sadly unwell and unable to attend, the Lodge responded with the calm assurance that has long been its hallmark. With short notice Roger Biss stepped into the Master’s chair with dignity and composure, guiding the ceremony with a steady hand that immediately set the tone for the evening. His leadership ensured that the work retained its warmth, meaning, and sense of occasion.

Throughout the ceremony the Senior Deacon, accompanied the candidate with the kind of gentle confidence that makes a Brother feel truly supported on his journey.

The atmosphere deepened further as Brother Rory Crabb delivered the Address with heartfelt sincerity, his words resonating around the Lodge and reminding the brethren of the deeper lessons at the heart of the Second Degree. When Julian Bloys stepped forward to present the Secrets of the Degree, he did so with clarity and a reassuring presence, ensuring that Brother Shearer received his instruction with understanding and confidence. Brother Shearer himself proved an exemplary candidate – attentive, engaged, and clearly moved by the significance of his advancement. His enthusiasm was met with genuine affection from the brethren, who were delighted to see him take this important step in his Masonic journey.

The evening was further enriched by the presence of Brother Tom Beasley, Chairman of the Adair Club, who delivered an engaging and informative presentation on the Club’s purpose and activities. He spoke warmly about the support offered to newer members across the Province, the opportunities for visiting, and the confidence-building experiences that the Club provides. His contribution added a sense of connection and shared purpose, and was received with great interest and appreciation by the brethren.

A Festive Board Filled with Fellowship and Surprise

At the festive board, the spirit of camaraderie continued to flourish. The room was lively and well attended, with conversation, laughter, and genuine fellowship filling the air. The highlight of the evening came during the reply to the visitors’ toast, when Mark Ollerenshaw offered something delightfully unexpected. With the enthusiastic participation of several of the visiting brethren, he performed a magic card trick that captivated the room. It was a simple moment – surprising, joyful, and wonderfully human and it reminded everyone present that Freemasonry is not only about ritual and learning, but also about the friendships and shared experiences that bind us together. His toast, filled with humour and warmth, carried a message that resonated deeply: that Freemasonry is universal, and that every Brother brings something unique to the Craft. When those gifts are shared, the whole Lodge is enriched.

A Lodge United in Purpose

By the close of the evening, Quantock Lodge had once again demonstrated the strength, warmth, and adaptability that define it. Brother Shearer’s advancement was conducted with dignity, heart, and a sense of occasion that will stay with him for many years to come.

The Lodge extends its heartfelt congratulations to Bro David Shearer, and sincere thanks to all who contributed to a truly memorable and inspiring night.
