Somerset Military Lodge (SML)Visit to RAF College Cranwell

SML held the first ever Masonic meeting at RAF College Cranwell. It was an initiation for a new member, so a memorable occasion and one that may not be beaten for the initiate. All the members and visitors were treated to a tour of College Hall by Flt Lt Scotty Toomer. Scotty held a wealth of information about the College and provided a very engaging, entertaining and informative tour of the College, pointing out highlights such as the works of T.E. Lawrence, the desk used by “Bomber” Harris, and Guy Gibson’s cigarette case.

The Brethren then assembled in the College theatre, which had been transformed into a Lodge room. SML members demonstrated the quality of their ritual with an exemplary initiation for Ash Shaw, a Naval Aircraft Engineer from RNAS Yeovilton. With the ceremony wrapped up we moved to York House to experience outstanding dining in the Officers Mess! (Silver Service at its finest). The Chef for the evening has been selected to train under Marcus Wearing, which indicates the quality we received across the four-course banquet.

There then followed a few quiet drinks in the Officers Mess Bar of York House. Somerset Provincial Lodge was represented by the Somerset Assistant Provincial Grand Master (APGM) Russ Woodland, who was accompanied by the Lincolnshire APGM David Bird.
