Vivary Lodge 50th Anniversary Meeting & Installation Report

On the 17th October 2025, Vivary Lodge, Taunton celebrated its 50th Anniversary having been consecrated that exact same day and month in 1975. The Lodge was highly honoured with the presence of three Past Provincial Grand Masters for the Province of Somerset, in the persons of Stuart Hadler (representing the Provincial Grand Master Ray Guthrie), David Jenkins and David Medlock (also a Past Assistant Grand Master of the United Grand Lodge of England) – all three also being honorary members of Vivary Lodge. In attendance were several Active Provincial Officers and Masters In Office keeping a close eye on proceedings.

October is therefore also Installation month for Vivary and Richard Wilson (Lodge Mentor) acted as Installing Master to place Ed Richings into the Chair of King Solomon for the ensuing masonic season in exceptional style; Ed then appointed and invested his new officers, with a full-house of Master Masons in the progressive offices this year. Working through the packed agenda, after welcoming the distinguished visitors in his own right, Ed then presented Brother Ian (Tommy) Tucker (above left) with a Certificate of Commendation from the Lodge Brethren for his outstanding work as Lodge Almoner over the past 4 years and in which office he continues. Tommy also received a lapel pin badge in the form of scrip purse – the Almoner’s jewel – and expressed his surprise and gratitude for recognition of his efforts. David Medlock also kindly presented Grand Lodge Certificates to Justin Fudge and Paul Clunn.

After the meeting the Brethren enjoyed a 4 course meal, provided by Taunton’s caterer: 5* Karen, which closely replicated the 1975 menu: ‘Pate A La Vivary’ – skipping the 1975 soup course – roast lamb, fruit salad & Somerset cream and a plate of cheese & biscuits to finish everyone off! In 1975, including table wine and sherry, the consecration dining cost £4 per head. Alan Clayton – Vivary Secretary provided a fantastic 50th anniversary cake, pieces of which enabled any diner not yet at maximum waistband tension to top themselves up.

Brethren departed after a very enjoyable Festive Board and Vivary Lodge hopes to continue to build on the successes of years gone and the years to come.
