A Memorable Afternoon on the Avon

On a warm summer Sunday afternoon, members and guests of the Royal Cumberland Lodge joined the Master for a scenic boat trip departing from the heart of Bristol. The event brought together brethren and friends for a relaxing cruise along the River Avon, blending fellowship with picturesque views.

The journey began at the landing stage beside the SS Great Britain, where the group boarded the Bristol Packet Boat.

As the vessel made its way past the city’s historic industrial landmarks and into the quieter stretches of countryside, the calm waters provided an ideal setting for conversation and camaraderie.

Midway through the trip, the party stopped at The Chequers Inn in Hanham. Guests enjoyed a leisurely meal and refreshments, taking time to catch up and share in good company. The stop proved a highlight, offering both fine hospitality and a chance to enjoy the riverside surroundings.

Reflecting on the day, the Master said, “It was wonderful to see so many familiar and new faces come together in such a relaxed setting. The boat trip offered the perfect balance of good company, fine scenery, and the spirit of our Lodge.”

The return voyage to Bristol continued the relaxed tone of the afternoon, with plenty of good spirits on board. Feedback from those who attended has been overwhelmingly positive, with many commenting on the well-balanced mix of sightseeing, socialising, and dining.

The Master expressed his thanks to all who joined the outing and to those who helped organise the day. The success of the trip has set a positive precedent for future Royal Cumberland Lodge social events.
