A mixture of emotions at Backwell Lodge
The first meeting back for Backwell Lodge after the summer break started of on a sombre note when John Edwards gave a eulogy to Jim Bragg who passed to the Grand Lodge above during the summer. Jim was quite a character, and the Lodge duly paid its respects to him in the appropriate manner.
On a happier note, the brethren of Backwell delivered an excellent third-degree ceremony.
The Lodge was very pleased to welcome several Grand Officers including three Past Assistant Provincial Grand Masters. One of which, Tony Guthrie, was there to present a 50th anniversary certificate to Richard Farmer on his reaching this magnificent milestone. Tony gave the Lodge an overview of Richard’s masonic endeavours and thanked him for his dedication and service to masonry in Somerset. He also found time to enlighten everyone on how Richard’s year of initiation coincided with the launch of the Muppet Show and that on the day of his initiation ABBA’s Dancing Queen was number one in the charts!
Richard is actually a 4th generation freemason and, quite remarkably, there has been a Farmer family member in the Province of Somerset for well over 100 years. His long-time friend (best part of 70 years!), John Peters further added to the occasion by presenting Richard with a pair of commemorative cufflinks.
