Catching Smiles

The Somerset Branch of The Masonic Fishing Charity season’s grand finale was a great success.

Organised by Chairman and Schools Liaison Officer Rob Collins, this was the last event after a very long season beginning in January. Their team of wonderful volunteers hosting a variety of fishing events in Somerset all year – really showcasing Freemasonry in the community.

Of special mention are: Mark Burton for organising all the bankside events; Howard Ford their secretary for dealing with all the admin; and Richard Ellis, events manager and treasurer.

The fishing was exemplary under the expert guidance of Rob Collins and every young person caught a trout! Then, with the other volunteers, they all went course-fishing resulting a variety of fish being caught.

A wonderful BBQ lunch followed, accompanied by much laughter and joviality. After which, Rob Collins presented each young person a medal and certificate to commemorate the day.

He was pleased to read a message from Meg Short, Ravenswood School Secondary Head of Department:

“Our pupils from Axe class at Ravenswood School had a fantastic day at Jacklands fishing lake in Nailsea, an event ran by the Masonic fishing charity. They thoroughly enjoyed working with all the volunteers and learning how to fish, they were particularly excited to all catch a trout and guess how much it weighed. The students were well supported and we could clearly see their confidence growing throughout the morning, where they worked and communicated with new adults and tried a new skill. All of them have said ‘It was the best fishing trip ever!’ and they would love to return again. Thank you all for organising and supporting our students so well throughout the day”.

They were also grateful to receive a generous cheque from Olympian Lodge which will go a long way towards funding the events next year.

Once again, The Somerset Branch of The Masonic Fishing Charity proved their mantra to be true, for they were certainly CATCHING SMILES!
