Travelling Trowel Tees Off a Great Night
“Visiting is the lifeblood of Masonry” is a phrase often said and often repeated — and the truth of it was demonstrated wonderfully at our last meeting.
It is visiting that can turn a good Lodge meeting into a great one. As ritual is perfected and performed, contrasted and compared, it is the little differences, the quirks and the traditions that make each Lodge unique. Sharing those experiences with one another is one of the great pleasures of Freemasonry.
On this occasion, the Travelling Trowel brought a good number of visitors to Benevolent Lodge from Somerset Fairways Lodge. Adding to the occasion was a father-and-son duo visiting from the Adair Club, making for an excellent gathering.

The evening teed off with the Travelling Trowel being handed over to the Warden in Charge, John Mackway. From there, it was a full drive into the evening’s business: the initiation of a new candidate into Benevolent Lodge.
Our candidate proved to be an excellent addition to the Lodge and was led flawlessly through the ceremony, making for a memorable and enjoyable evening for all involved.
The Festive Board was every bit as lively, with our visitors being serenaded by the Lodge Choir with the Visitors’ Song. This is something Benevolent Lodge is renowned for, and it really is a special performance — one that simply has to be witnessed.
Another highlight that must be seen was the Entered Apprentice Song accompanied by the Entered Apprentice Chain- a rare piece of ritual in which everyone participates. A truly special piece, it provided a fitting finale to what had been a thoroughly enjoyable and memorable night.
So, if you fancy visiting Benevolent Lodge, you can be sure that you will always receive a warm welcome. After all, visiting really is the lifeblood of Masonry.
