The High Sheriff of Somerset visits Taunton

In the words of the High Sheriff:

What a fascinating afternoon at the open day for the Masonic Hall in Taunton. We were warmly welcomed by Russ Woodland, Assistant Provincial Grand Master for Somerset and also present was Polly Marsh DL and the Deputy Mayor of Taunton, Rob Isaacs.

We had the opportunity to learn about Free Masonry, it’s history and it’s work across Somerset. We heard about the 26 centres across the county, the various lodges that make up the Province, and the fundamental principles of Free Masonry; integrity, friendship, respect and service.

It was particularly interesting to hear about the history behind the ceremonies and traditions, and to have some of the common myths and misconceptions explained.

We also had the opportunity to look around the museum, with it’s fascinating collecting of artefacts and memorabilia, and learn about the symbolism behind many of them.

The hall itself was extremely impressive and everyone we met was incredibly welcoming.

We also met members of the Wyvern Lodge, The motorcycle lodge, and it was fun hearing some of their stories and finding out what had brought them together.

And, of course, there was a fantastic tea!

All in all, a really informative afternoon. It was great to meet so many interesting people, learn more about the organisation and it’s history, and to see the community and fellowship that are such an important part of their work.
