Fairway Lodge Tees-Off At Orchardleigh
Orchardleigh Golf Club, near Frome, Somerset, was the final venue of this year’s scheduled fixtures for Somerset Fairway Lodge.
The golfers arrived to find the course in great condition, considering the blistering heat that had been less than kind to most golf courses in the UK, this summer. Sure, there were some thin patches on some of the fairways, but credit must be accorded to the greenkeepers for the healthy greens and overall condition of the course.
The weather on this September day was set fair with sunny spells and only a light breeze.
The statutory golfers’ pre-match fayre of bacon rolls and coffee were eagerly bagged on arrival whereupon the Brethren enjoyed some time to catch up following Somerset’s summer break from most regular Lodge meetings.
With that done, the rules, playing order and handicaps were confirmed, before the first four-ball group teed-off and headed off along the downhill fairway of the par four first hole.
The day’s competition format was, primarily, an 18-hole Individual Stableford albeit with the added interest of having the entrants also cast as pairs, playing separately, but having their scores added together when their rounds were concluded.
The verified scorecards were collected and checked by Lodge Secretary, Scott McKechnie, who would reveal the individual and pairs scores after that evening’s regular meeting of Somerset Fairway Lodge being held, on this occasion, at Frome Masonic Hall.
The evening concluded with a Festive Board dinner enjoyed in the lively and fun-filled atmosphere that typifies Fairway Lodge.
The golf results were then announced by Scott, accompanied by the usual interjections of good-humoured golf banter whereupon the victors received their high-stakes prizes (golf balls!!), awarded in number commensurate with their position on the podium…..
