Gordano Lodge Delivers the Travelling Trowel – With a Difference!

On 4 July, Gordano Lodge presented the Somerset Travelling Trowel to Sylvanus Lodge; but in rather unusual circumstances.

Sylvanus Lodge was due to meet in Frome on 11 July, but it was not practical for the Travelling Trowel to be presented during that meeting. Fortunately, it was realised that several members of both lodges would already be together a week earlier at the Somerset Masonic Shooting Club’s Breakfast Shoot.

So, on a glorious summer’s morning, Freemasons from across Somerset and neighbouring Provinces gathered at the Mendip Shooting Ground for the monthly Breakfast Shoot, organised by the Somerset Chairman, Rob Collins, Worshipful Master of Gordano Lodge.

Following a hearty breakfast, competitors were divided into small teams, with experienced shooters helping newcomers through a variety of entertaining clay pigeon shooting challenges. After an enjoyable and competitive morning, it came as no great surprise that the winning team was captained by Rob Collins.

At lunchtime, gathered in the clubhouse and in front of a large assembly of Brethren – which included our Assistant Provincial Grand Master Russ Woodland – Rob Collins formally presented the Somerset Travelling Trowel to Richard Winter on behalf of Sylvanus Lodge.

The day’s enjoyment continued into the afternoon with the shooting ground’s Open Day, providing even more opportunities for fellowship and friendly competition.

It was an excellent day of sport, camaraderie and Masonic fellowship, and a memorable occasion on which the Travelling Trowel continued its journey around Somerset.
