A Night Of Friendship, Meaning, and Masonic Pride At Quantock Lodge

The brethren of Quantock Lodge gathered on a bright 1st April evening in Watchet to welcome a new Brother into the Craft, and what an evening it proved to be. The initiation of Mr Darryl Smith (pictured above right in both photos) was not only a ceremony of dignity and symbolism, but also a celebration of lifelong friendship, personal commitment, and the thriving spirit of the lodge.
Sitting proudly in the North East corner was Brother David Shearer, Darryl’s proposer and lifelong friend (pictured above left in both photos). Initiated himself only a few months earlier in November 2025, David watched with unmistakable pride as the man he has known for so many years took his first steps into Freemasonry. The bond between proposer and candidate is always special, but on this night it carried an extra warmth—two friends now united in a shared journey of learning, service, and brotherhood.
The work of the evening was carried out with sincerity, care, and a genuine desire to give Darryl the best possible start to his Masonic journey. Denis Griggs, serving as Junior Deacon, guided the candidate with calm assurance and delivered a superb Charge at the conclusion of the ceremony—clear, heartfelt, and deeply resonant. Rory Crabb offered the North East corner address with sincerity and poise, setting the perfect tone for Brother Darryl’s first symbolic step as a Mason. Bruce Freeman presented the Working Tools of the First Degree with clarity and passion, ensuring the new Brother understood both their meaning and their relevance to his personal journey.
This initiation marks the fourth ceremony of its kind at Quantock Lodge this year, a testament to the lodge’s growing reputation as a welcoming, vibrant, and forward‑looking home for new Masons. As always, the Festive Board was a highlight of the evening—excellent food, warm company, and the unmistakable hum of genuine fellowship. The toast to the candidate, delivered by proposer David Shearer, was particularly moving. David spoke with affection, humour, and sincerity, giving the brethren a deeper insight into Darryl’s character, values, and the qualities that make him such a welcome addition to the lodge. Darryl’s response was equally impressive; he expressed gratitude, humility, and a clear commitment to learning, supporting, and thriving within Quantock Lodge and the Craft as a whole. His words left no doubt that he is ready to embrace the journey ahead with enthusiasm and integrity.
To round off the evening, Willie Willmetts delivered the traditional talk on the Broken Column. This moment, always poignant for a newly initiated Brother, helped tie together the symbolism, lessons, and emotional resonance of the night. It provided Darryl with a final reflection to carry with him as he begins his Masonic path. The initiation was everything a Masonic ceremony should be—warm, dignified, meaningful, and filled with genuine brotherly love. It showcased the very best of Quantock Lodge: its passion for welcoming new members, its commitment to nurturing their growth, and its unwavering belief in the power of friendship and fraternity. As Darryl begins his journey, he does so surrounded by brethren who believe in him, support him, and look forward to walking beside him in the years ahead.
A wonderful night for Darryl, for David, and for Quantock Lodge. A night filled with pride, purpose, and the promise of great things to come.
