VE Day 80th Anniversary Service of Thanksgiving
The three provinces of Devonshire, Cornwall and Somerset are coming together to hold service of thanksgiving to mark the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day.

VE Day marked the surrender of Nazi Germany and the end of hostilities in Europe that were part of World War 2. During that period, many Freemasons lost their lives and an even greater number were impacted in so many ways. The Provincial Grand Masters of Devonshire, Cornwall and Somerset wanted to mark this occasion and will do so with a special Evensong service at Exeter Cathedral.
The service is made even more special by the request that brethren wear regalia to the service, or their service uniform and medals if so desired. This will make for a spectacular sight. Many lodges will also be parading their banners into the cathedral.
The event is not ticketed and is open to partners or family members to attend as well. Brethren bringing regalia should bring a soft bag rather than cases as their will be no space for robing or storing anything before or during the service.
Evensong will begin at 5:30pm on Thursday 8th May 2025, and brethren are asked to take their seats before that so that the parading of banners and dignitaries can begin. The service should take about an hour. It is expected that, as well as the 3 provincial groups, we will be joined by the Lord Lieutenant of Devon and others for the service. During the service, the names of fallen brethren from each of the 3 provinces will be read out and there will be a last post and a piper’s lament to mark their sacrifice
