A Benevolent Family Affair
It was a special November evening at Benevolent Lodge No. 446, who meet in Wells, as their Inner Guard Sean Sloan admitted his son Edward to be Raised to the third degree. A moving ceremony, although it was suspected some father/son coaching sessions on the questions took place as Edward was word perfect! Even with the late substitutions of some of the officers due to illness, the ceremony was skilfully performed, which was a testament to those who stepped in late-on.
With the darker, colder nights drawing in it was once again a short brisk walk through the medieval gatehouse walls to the historic inn where a warm welcome greeted us. With many a visitor present, the festive board was a jolly occasion with some friendly rivalry to be had with neighbouring lodges, but needless to say it involved golf and skittles bragging rights, following competitions earlier this year. A hearty meal was served and it goes without saying that the visitors’ song was performed by the 446 choir for our visitors.
It was great to see generations of a family enjoying Masonry, and keeping with that theme Benevolent will have a very special meeting in January 2025, once again involving a father and son. With Barry Davies’ father Norman who will be joining the lodge in his 100th year, 38 years after his son was initiated into it. It will be a very special night for the lodge.
