It’s A Jungle Out There For James Joyce Of St Kew 1222

In June 2023 St Kew Senior Deacon James Joyce competed in the ‘Beyond the Ultimate Jungle Ultra Marathon’ in the Amazon rainforest. A 230km self-sufficient footrace over 5 stages through dense jungle, fast running rivers and thick oozy swamp.

James and Glaisa’s family had their world turned upside down, at the dawn of COVID in 2020. Their eldest son, then only two and a half years old, was diagnosed with leukaemia.  In recognition of the incomparable support, they received from the NHS and charitable organisations, James decided to do something for charity – in particular Young lives vs Cancer (formerly CLIC) and signed up for this rather extreme event. James managed to finish a respectable 8th overall and raised an impressive £5,200, with St Kew helping towards that with donations totalling £440, not including brethrens’ private donations. Though most importantly their son responded well and finally completed treatment successfully in August 2023.
