Somerset v Wiltshire Golf Competition.

Farrington Park Golf Club, Somerset, was the venue for this year’s annual golf competition between the Provinces of Somerset and Wiltshire, held on Monday 22nd May.

The Cyril Driver Trophy, which has been the prize of this annual competition for over fifty years, was keenly contested by seven teams of two from each Province. Better-ball match-play was the format.

In addition to the trophy, there were two skills prizes to be awarded for nearest-the-pin on two of the Par 3 holes, one for each team.

Nearest-The-Pin prize winners with Ray Guthrie, Wiltshire’s Mark Jeyasingh and Somerset’s Graham Jeffery.

Somerset, led by their Captain, PGM / MEGS Ray Guthrie were keen to retain the trophy, which they won at last year’s encounter at High Post Golf Club, Wiltshire.

Wiltshire’s PGM / MEGS John Reid was also playing for the Wiltshire team, led by their Captain, Pete Taylor.

The course was in splendid playing condition and the weather on the day was sunny and dry, with a constant moderate NE breeze, as the competition got underway at midday.

Once all the competitors had completed their matches and were back in the clubhouse to enjoy a well-earned drink and excellent presentation dinner, the scores were revealed. Somerset had indeed managed to retain the trophy again this year. Six of the Somerset pairs were victorious, with the remaining pair finishing their match all-square.

Wiltshire’s Captain, Pete Taylor, then presented the Cyril Driver Trophy back to Ray Guthrie for another year, until the next round in 2024, at a course in Wiltshire to be confirmed.

An excellent day was enjoyed by all who took part. Thanks are due to the Captains for organising their teams, and to Farrington Park for hosting the event.
