A Hand Up, not a Hand Out

Perhaps one of the groups most affected, and possibly forgotten, during the current Pandemic has been the homeless. A little while ago our Assistant PGM, W. Bro. Martin Slocombe, informed me that if I could raise funds locally, he would be able to obtain some Match Funding. He pointed me in the direction of an organisation here in Weston called Somewhere To Go. Their motto is “A Hand Up, not a Hand Out”. They provide a warm, safe refuge 365 days of the year for homeless, vulnerable and disadvantaged people. This includes hot food, showers, clean clothing and expert advice in several relevant areas.

They have obtained some adjacent premises which they would like to refurbish to extend their operations, including a partner Mental Health facility. They will also require additional equipment, appliances etc.

With donations from Weston Lodges, Sir Isaac Newton Lodge in Nailsea, a contribution from the Somerset Masonic Fund and Match Funding from the Masonic Charitable Foundation I was able to amass a remarkable £8,600. A cheque for this amount has been sent to the organisation. We have an invitation to attend the opening of the new facilities when completed and an official presentation will take place once Covid19 is under control.

The generosity of my Brethren never ceases to amaze me, particularly during these dreadful times, and I am extremely grateful to everyone who has contributed.
